Is it safe to auto-update your app dependencies?

Automatic updates keep your software secure but require a testing process to prevent breaking changes from reaching your live production environment.

Short answer

You can safely automate patch and security updates if you have a testing suite, but major version changes always require manual review and a rollback plan.

Understand semantic versioning

Software uses semantic versioning to show the scale of changes in an update. Patch versions typically fix bugs or security flaws without changing how the code works, while major versions often introduce breaking changes. You must track these updates because versions like Node.js 20 eventually reach the end of their support life and stop receiving security fixes.

Use lockfiles and pull requests

Tools like Dependabot or Renovate create pull requests when a new version of a package is available. These tools read your lockfile to understand exactly which versions you use and propose specific changes. This approach allows you to review the code and run automated tests before any changes reach your main branch.

Automate security patches

PCI DSS 6.3.3 expects critical security patches within one month of release because unpatched vulnerabilities are a common source of security risks. You can set your system to auto-merge security updates if they pass all your automated tests. This keeps your app compliant with standards like ISO 27001 without requiring constant manual intervention for every small fix.

Protect the production server

Never run update commands directly on your production server because a failed installation can take your site offline. Always test updates in a separate environment and keep a backup of your previous working state. If an update causes an error, you must be able to roll back to the previous version immediately to maintain service.

What to do

  • Configure Dependabot or Renovate
  • Run automated tests on every pull request
  • Auto-merge security patches that pass tests
  • Keep a rollback plan for every deployment.
